Untitled Dream

Last night the face I saw in a dream
was the most perfect ever in my life
(though in the dream, unlike mine,
it was a short but informed life)
she was a sunrise of youthful beauty,
dreamlike beams you
could not look directly into,
yet there poured from my
(assumed hardened) heart
a superb liquid devotion
never before before my mind,
and I said to my dreamed self and her
"I want to tramp the path
of the rest of my life
with you, and love you
as purely a mind does
chambered in a heart"
and she smiled
and I awoke then
and suffered, suffered
as I have never suffered
in fifty-five years of what I take
to be in my stupid shelter of life suffering
to know the finality of what
that damned paltry thing is
that is called love
but is really sublimely beyond
the undreamed life what we call it.
